Galway Launches Ireland’s First Solar Public EV Charging Hub
Galway has launched a pioneering electric vehicle (EV) charging hub in Westside, marking a major milestone in Ireland’s transition to sustainable transport. The facility is the first of its kind in the country to combine solar power, battery storage and grid backup.
Located at the Westside Community Centre, the hub features 91 rooftop solar panels feeding into a 150kWh battery system. This setup powers six EV charging stations—split between fast (DC) and medium (AC) chargers—ensuring reliable, round-the-clock service.
As part of a pilot initiative, the hub offers discounted rates for AC charging for:
- City residents without home charging access (e.g. those in apartments)
- Taxi drivers and public transport operators
The project is a collaboration between Galway City Council, the Department of Transport, Zero Emission Vehicles Ireland (ZEVI), and partners including Electric Skyline, ePower, ARBARR, and the ROBUST mobility hub.
Galway Mayor Mike Cubbard highlighted the hub’s role in making EV ownership more accessible:
“This initiative supports residents who want to switch to electric vehicles but face barriers like lack of home charging or high commercial rates. It’s also a boost for taxi drivers looking to go electric.”
The site also integrates with the ROBUST e-mobility hub, offering shared access to e-cars, e-bikes, and e-cargo bikes via the ESB EHubs app.
Minister of State for Transport Seán Canney praised the project’s innovation:
“This is a smart, forward-thinking solution that leverages existing infrastructure and renewable energy to deliver fast, reliable EV charging.”
To use the hub, users can download the ePower app. For reduced-rate access, contact Galway City Council at 091 536400 or email CustomerService@GalwayCity.ie.
