Gregans Castle Hotel

Caring for the environment and co-existing with nature is at the heart of our philosophy. We will continually strive to improve our environmental practices in a range of areas including energy and water usage. We will also continue to develop a number of ecotourism experiences for our customers to enjoy.

Gregans Castle Hotel is a luxury, eco and gourmet retreat, nestled in the heart of the beautiful Burren on Ireland’s west coast.

Owner Simon Haden is a founding member of The Burren Ecotourism Network and is the holder of a Certificate in Ecotourism which was awarded by Sligo Institute of Technology.

Check out just some of their initiatives:

  • They support environmentally sustainable tourism by encouraging guests to walk or cycle while staying at the hotel. They provide free bicycles for guest use, offer walking maps at reception, and can book a local walking guide for tours on The Burren. In March 2022, they successfully lobbied to have a new Local Link bus service stop at the hotel gate six times per day.
  • In January 2023, they installed a PV solar system that generates 32% of their daytime electricity. They bottle their own water from a private mountain spring for use in bedrooms and the restaurant, reusing all glass bottles. The same mountain spring supplies the hotel.
  • In 2019, they established a vegetable garden, which has since been expanded to supply most of their vegetable needs. The garden’s water comes from an onsite well, pumped with a solar pump.
  • Several times a year, they conduct litter clean-ups from The Corkscrew Hill.
